Recruiting MS and PhD Students for The Rowan Lab

The Rowan Lab at the University of Tennessee is recruiting MS and PhD students that are interested in applying genomics to a variety of challenges across the beef industry. We have ongoing projects that range from applied to basic, and require a spectrum of computation, wet lab, and live animal work. These major projects include:

  • Testing novel strategies for measuring methane emission and metabolism in forage-based cattle populations
  • Using -omics data to understand and predict heterosis
  • Optimizing genotype imputation & performing massive sequence-density GWAS

The ideal graduate student would have a degree in Animal Science, Biology, Genetics, or Data/Computer Science with a keen interest in genetics, genomics, or animal breeding. Knowledge of beef cattle or livestock is appreciated but by no means required. Background in writing code (R, Python, Command Line) and computational pipelines would be beneficial. Positions are fully funded, and include a $30,000 annual stipend, tuition, and all fees/insurance. Exceptional PhD applicants may be eligible for additional internal fellowships. Start dates are flexible (Spring or Fall 2025).

The University of Tennessee is growing rapidly, and genomics has become a recent focus across the system with a nucleus of research occurring on the Ag Campus. We work closely with other groups at UT that have expertise in molecular genetics, microbiology, reproductive physiology, and AI/statistical modelling. Our group also collaborates closely with breed associations and other industry groups, providing a wealth of data and opportunities for engaging with science outside of the academic world. Altogether, this environment provides a diversity of training and connections that will benefit any student’s next career step.
