Due to the on-going COVID pandemic and the prevalence of new positive cases in Tennessee, the decision has been made to move the 2021 State Junior Swine Show to a virtual model. It is understood that a virtual show is less than ideal and does not replace the show experience for youth, but we currently live in a less than ideal world. The virtual show still provides youth with the opportunity to show off their swine projects and more importantly the chance to learn from their experience in order to improve for next time. This really is teaching life skills.
This decision is made with some hesitation as we all recognize the importance of youth livestock programs and the significant investment of time and resources that youth and families put into their livestock projects. Factors that led to this decision include the expected total number of people at the show, the length of time on-site, the confined space, recent restrictions on large gatherings from the Governor and the fact that Tennessee is in the top 3 in new positive cases per capita in the nation. It was decided that the risk was too great.
Please understand that this decision was made for this specific show at this specific time. It is expected to resume normal, in-person programs in the near future. More details on the virtual hog show and skillathon will be made available very soon. Entry fees that were already paid for the state show will be refunded back through the County Extension offices over the next couple of weeks.
