Ruminococcus species

In what appeared to be a good year for Ruminococcus coverage at rumenmicrobes.utk.edu, all the species belonging to the genus Ruminococcus were highlighted in September. These bacteria are present in the digestive and reproductive tracts of cattle. They are highly abundant and contribute to the digestive and reproductive health of the animal. This past year we learned about Ruminococcus albus. This bacterium has been linked to important rumen microbial activities such as cellulose degradation. Because of this activity, its genes have been used in the biofuel industry. View the interactive presentation.
