Animal Science is fortunate to have dedicated and talented professional staff that assists our faculty in their research and programs. We would like to take the opportunity to let you get to know them. Today we will meet Xiao Yang.

Questions

Who are the team of faculty you work with and what is the primary research areas performed by you in the lab?

I work in the lab of Dr. Zhao. My research is monitoring poultry behaviors and improving animal welfare through automatic technologies, such as image processing, sound analysis, and smart sensors.

What lead you to your research interest and what is your favorite procedure to do in the lab?

I was originally influenced by my family tradition. A lot of my family members work in the fields related to agriculture and livestock. Making technologies “automatic” and “smart” has become the keyword of many fields, as well as in poultry industry. I enjoy analyzing data and discovering something new from the results.

What is the best part of your job?

I believe precision livestock farming has a magnificent prospect. It would be exciting if my research can accelerate the evolution of poultry industry in some ways.

What is your favorite activity outside of lab/work that makes Friday a day to look forward to each week?

Drawing watercolors and doing yoga are my favorite ways to relax.
